The Australian Open had both awesome Men’s and Ladies’ finals. The Williams sisters faced each other again, like old times. And the veteran Men favorites, Nadal and Federer battled in a nail biting 5-setter. Those classic match ups may never happen again.
Being in the cold Northeast, I look forward to the tennis event from down under because I get cabin fever this time of year, in frigid Januaries, and that warm Aussie sun seems to shine through my TV screen and warm up my living room. You can also say, it is my superbowl.

The Australian Open was filled with early upsets with likes of Federer and my favorite, Nadal. Both top seeds have well-rounded games, but sometimes, the player with the faster and flatter serve will be the one to advance. It’s hard to imagine being on the receiving end of a 125+ MPH serve. Today, my drawing is a player who is about to receive one of those mega serves.

We are in the first week of the Australian Open, round of 16. Who do you hope to win? Personally, I hope American Isner can at least reach the finals, but of course, the big four would await him – Federer, Murray, Djokovic and Nadal. On the ladies side, it would be cool to see Canadian Bouchard win it, but it will probably be Sharapova or Serena Williams.
My sketch depicts a two-handed backhand that is set just before the ball bounces directly in front of the player. When the ball is hit deep to the baseline of your opponent’s side, he or she has a split second to decide whether to hit it or let it go in hopes that the ball will go out of bounds. When you watch a game, you will see this as a tactic the pros use. Hitting deep also keeps your adversary from approaching the net and taking control of the point.

This is my action drawing of a player in mid toss during a serve. Where’s the tennis ball you ask? It is thrown so high that it is out of the frame. The higher the toss, the faster the ball will hurl towards the opponent. All top players, like Sharapova, for example, strive to win free points by achieving a well-placed ace.
