It’s the peak of summer and what a great time to get outdoors, albeit rather humid lately. I like to cool off by going on the water to do canoeing. Today, I use a strange moving lure called a Scatter Rap by Rapala. Instead of wiggling like a fish, this lure wobbles. If you stop and jerk the retrieve, it actually darts around and gives a different look to predatory fish. Check out my short video of a couple of big bass that I catch and release.

Plus, my cat, Mochi, makes a cameo in the video, where she has a staring contest with a deer, just outside our window, not once… but twice!

I recently got a new toy, that allows me to access water. One can fold it and fit it into a suitcase or a backpack! It’s called the Rogue Lite Packraft by Kokopelli. Simply hike into the back country and launch the inflatable boat into spots like never before.

This packraft is the lightest and most packable raft out anywhere. But, is it easy to inflate? How does it handle on the water? Find out in my short video as I give it a test run, paddling the small boat on a open lake.

Hey everybody. It’s 4th of July weekend. Let’s get outside and do something :) For me, it will be canoeing and fishing. When fishing, it is fun to seek multi-species, three or more kinds of fish, which makes it a Grand Slam. Yes, just like in baseball. It is a term adopted for Florida fishing where one tries to catch a variety of fish in one day, such as Tarpon, Sea Trout, Snook and Red Fish. I don’t live in Florida, unfortunately, but in my short video, I like to challenge myself by catching four types of fish, in my local freshwaters, including Sunfish, Rock bass, Smallmouth and Largemouth.

Also, in my video, I meet a Snapping Turtle that is not afraid of me. At first, he looks like he is dead, very still, but he is just very sleepy and content by basking under the sun.

One a day I have trouble catching bass with various presentations, I decide to use a new lure by Rapala. It is a crank bait that emulates the look of a bait fish called a Shad. When retrieving the lure in the water, it has a vibrating swimming action that catches the attention of predatory fish. The coloration I am using is silver which reflects under the sun and has a red under belly as if it is injured. Is it successful in getting Bass? Check out my short video where I test out this new fishing product. Enjoy!

Plus, in the video, I meet a lonely goose and I make some fun references to Game of Thrones :)

drawings: boat postcards

April 25, 2019

fun_boat_postcards_by_al_lau

I made some fun drawings of recreational water crafts. My illustrations are printed as postcards in a set of four, including a Sit-on-top Kayak, a Sit-in Kayak, a Stand-up Paddle board and a Tandem Canoe. Each is a large card of 5 x 7 inches.

The postcards are available at my store. They are perfect to send to friends and family members who are paddlers, active, or simply, outdoor lovers. Check them out :)

As you can probably tell, I am ready to get outdoors. Are you ready for fun in the sun?

Spring is one of best times to catch (and release) fish because of the spawn run. Fish swim up the rivers in May and April. While some target trout and salmon, I try to target Shad and Bass. Check out my short outdoor video and see how I do. Also included, is my first sightings of turtles, out from hibernation, basking in the sun. Enjoy!

Thanks for watching!

drawing: sit-in kayak

April 6, 2019

sit_in_kayak_by_al_lau

Are you thinking of getting a kayak? Sit-in Kayaks come in different lengths and widths. Shorter kayaks that are about 6 feet long and 32 inches wide may be lighter and stable, but wont have good efficiency. Longer kayaks, as long as 16 feet and 28 inches wide, are not as stable, but will cut straight through the water with great efficiency.

Sit-in Kayaks are popular due to their generally lighter weight build, compared to Sit-on-top Kayaks. However, this type of personal watercraft may not be for everybody because some may feel claustrophobic. Sit-in Kayaks can constrict the legs to a straight position. I recommend you test out which vessel best suits your comfort level by renting it first before you buy.

My drawing shows a Sit-in Kayak which is somewhere in between a short and long boat. To me, it is just right for the casual paddler.

If you enjoy paddling, like me, let me know which watercraft suits your taste. I hope you get outdoors soon, as the weather is getting warmer and trees are blooming. Happy paddling all :)
